Operation Shanela: A Collaborative Success in Crime Combat in Kimberley

In a significant move to enhance safety and clamp down on criminal activities, the South African Police Service (SAPS), in conjunction with local authorities and various governmental departments, mobilized a major operation named "Shanela" in Kimberley, yielding noteworthy results. Spearheaded by the Acting Provincial Commissioner for the Northern Cape, Major General Luntu Ngubelanga, and supported by Sol Plaatje Mayor, Mr Kagisho Sonyone, the operation was conducted on August 16, 2024, to tighten the noose around criminal elements in the area.

Brigadier Nicky Mtongana served as the Overall Commander, ensuring seamless co-operation among diverse forces, including the local SAPS from Galeshewe, Kagisho, Roodepan, and Kimberley, as well as Provincial and local Traffic, bolstered by support from the Departments of Labour, Home Affairs, and elements from the Sol Plaatje Municipality. This initiative aimed to consolidate efforts towards a common goal: a safer Kimberley.

The multifaceted approach of Operation Shanela embraced compliance inspections, setup of vehicle checkpoints (VCPs), and intensive patrolling both on foot and in vehicles within the Kimberley area and its environs. This integrated practice ensured a thorough execution of law and order procedures, manifesting in 302 vehicles and 594 individuals being checked, which led to the discovery of various offenses and the issuing of 41 fines totaling around R30,000.

In addition to vehicle and personal searches, enforcement was extended to local businesses, with the Sol Plaatje Municipality heading compliance inspections. The operation's rigorous approach resulted in the closure of 5 shops and disbanding several illegal street vendors, substantially disrupting unlawful trading practices.

The operation culminated in high visibility patrols across key locations in Kimberley—spanning the central business district, malls, and shopping centers—further cementing the sense of security among residents and visitors alike.

Following the successful raids, patrols, and inspections, Major General Ngubelanga expressed gratitude towards Mayor Sonyone and all involved stakeholders for their unwavering commitment to the project. The collective efforts have paved the way for a more secure Kimberley, reflecting the operation's enduring impact.
