In a bid to quell the disturbances arising from succession disputes within the Zulu royal family, the KwaZulu-Natal government has appointed a mediation team consisting of key figures from the royal family itself. This team is poised to undertake the critical mission of resolving conflicts that have disrupted peace in areas governed by amakhosi, the traditional leaders.
The team was officially introduced on Thursday by KwaZulu-Natal co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Sipho Hlomuka, alongside King Misuzulu’s traditional prime minister Thulasizwe Buthelezi. Comprised of nine senior royals who have long-standing bonds with the recently deceased King Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, they are uniquely positioned in terms of experience and respect within the community to address these internal issues.
Prince Mathubesizwe kaBhekuzulu, a brother to the late King Zwelithini, will lead the team. His siblings, princes Mbonisi, Vulindlela, and Mxolisi, as well as Princess Lindi, are set to bring their authoritative presence into the fold, with Princess Lindi being the sole female representative on the team. The inclusion of other respected figures like Prince Thuthukani kaMcwayizeni kaSolomon, the king’s praise singer Inyosi Buzetsheni Mdletshe, and revered royal chaplains Reverend Canon Hamilton Mbatha and Reverend Canon Daniel Mthembu ensures a diverse yet cohesive unit.
The formation of this mediation team follows stipulations from the KwaZulu-Natal Traditional Leadership and Governance Act, which empowers the MEC to handle all matters related to traditional leadership. The intent is to bolster the institution of traditional leadership in KwaZulu-Natal, enhancing the work and sway of amakhosi in their respective communities by providing a robust framework for conflict resolution.
Families of amakhosi presently embroiled in succession disputes are set to collaborate closely with the newly appointed team, while the department of co-operative government and traditional affairs will play an intermediary role in the engagements.
The creation of this mediation team represents a significant step towards the restoration of harmony and stability in the Zulu royal family and the areas they oversee. As custodians of tradition and authority, the amakhosi, backed by this experienced team, are expected to navigate through the challenges of succession, re-establishing order and unity amongst the Zulu people.
