DA Urges Inquiry into Tourism DG amid Bullying Accusations

Amid severe allegations of bullying and misuse of authority, the Democratic Alliance has heightened calls for a formal inquiry into the conduct of Victor Tharage, the director-general of South Africa’s Department of Tourism. The DA's persistence for an investigation stems from distressing accounts of workplace hostility that have led to the departure of key personnel from the department.

City Press reports have brought to light troubling claims of bullying and manipulative behavior that suggest a possible pattern of abuse by Tharage. To further complicate matters, these assertions include accusations of power abuse, which ostensibly culminated in the resignation of senior figures within the department. It was revealed that in June, three directors reached out to the Office of the Public Protector, prompting a probe to look into the allegations of power abuse and failure in responsibilities laid at Tharage’s feet.

Despite these allegations, Tharage has outwardly denied any wrongdoing. However, the situation has incited anxieties within the DA, thrusting concerns to the forefront about a potentially toxic and harmful environment within an institution critical to the nation’s economy. With tourism being a linchpin in South Africa's economic framework, a stable and motivational work milieu is deemed essential for the industry's flourishing, as highlighted by DA MP and spokesperson on Tourism, Haseena Ismail.

Ismail emphasized the vital role of tourism in the economy and how its optimal operation is intrinsically linked to the morale and welfare of its employees. Ismail disclosed that written questions are being prepared to send to Minister Patricia de Lille to ascertain the full extent of the resignations and comprehend the prevailing conditions within her department. According to the DA member of Parliament, proper steps should be taken by the minister to address the issue, which includes launching a full-scale probe into the alleged conduct of the DG.
