In a harrowing incident on Tuesday night, August 6, two car guards employed by a vehicle tracking company faced life-threatening injuries following an ambush in the Samora Machel suburb of Cape Town. The violent encounter resulted from their pursuit of a hijacked car, leading to a critical condition for one of the guards and serious injuries for the other.

The succession of events that night began as the car guards were on the trail of a stolen vehicle. When the thieves became aware of being followed, they abandoned the car in the Kosovo section A of the region, prompting the guards to park near the deserted vehicle as they awaited further assistance.

During this vulnerable time, the ordeal turned tragic. Witnesses reported that a group of armed assailants took the guards by surprise, opening fire with multiple shots and critically injuring both men before stripping them of their firearms and fleeing the area.

Despite attempts to escape the sudden onslaught, one guard was shot near the abandoned car while the other was hit as he tried to run, leaving both in precarious conditions by the time law enforcement arrived.

The local Community Policing Forum (CPF), as stated by spokesperson Bongani Maqungwana, only became aware of the incident during a meeting. They were uninformed of the exact origins of the carjacking but highlighted the critical state of the guards and their subsequent hospitalization.

Western Cape police spokesman Captain Frederick Van Wyk underscored that crime scene experts had been dispatched and were thoroughly examining the area. In the wake of the incident, authorities have launched an investigation, registering two counts of attempted murder. Captain Van Wyk urges anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact CrimeStop at 08600 10111.

In addition to a swift police response, this violent act demands broader community alertness and participation. As the recovery of the car guards and the pursuit of the suspects proceed, it underscores the ever-present perils faced by security staff and the necessity for vigilance in Cape Town's battle against crime.
