Cabinet Hails Law Enforcement Victories in Combating Crime across South Africa

In a determined effort to grapple with the challenges of organized crime in South Africa, the Cabinet has praised the consistent achievements of the nation's law enforcement agencies. A substantial number of members from organized crime syndicates and gangs have been handcuffed thanks to these relentless efforts.

According to Minister in The Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, the successes of Operation Shanela executed by the South African Police Service (SAPS) are evident in the impressive number of arrests made recently. The crackdown resulted in 766,237 people being taken into custody for a slew of offenses. A significant portion of these arrests, totaling 161,752, were suspects sought for high-priority crimes. These heinous crimes comprise murder, cash-in-transit heists, armed robberies, rapes, and car hijackings.

Operation Shanela's momentum doesn't stop there. Further commendations were extended following the closure of an unlawful military training facility located in White River, Mpumalanga. This operation was characterized by an intelligent, multi-agency law enforcement approach, resulting in the arrest of 95 Libyan nationals.

Cabinet's address stressed the importance of community participation in combating crime, warning, however, against vigilantism's pitfalls. It underscored the collaborative efforts needed to maintain law and order and the safety of citizens, including the young and vulnerable in schools.

In the realm of justice, Cabinet gave recognition to the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court's efforts, which saw the conviction and sentencing of former officials from the Department of Home Affairs and various foreign individuals. They were convicted for fraud and corruption offenses against the immigration system, marking a significant win in the intractable fight against graft.

Cabinet's stand is clear: the victories in law enforcement contribute significantly to the government's overarching goal of creating an ethical, professional, and functioning developmental state. This entails building systems that are robust, free from corruption, and where law and order prevail for the benefit and safety of all South Africans.
