JMPD Officers Suspended Amidst Probes into EFF Councillor Moshe Mphahlele's Death

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is in turmoil following the suspension of an undisclosed number of officers over their alleged involvement in the untimely death of Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor Moshe Mphahlele. The incident took place during a protest in Bramley, a neighborhood near Alexandra, Johannesburg. On a fateful Sunday, Mphahlele succumbed to injuries after being shot.

Mphahlele was reportedly part of a "peaceful service delivery programme" prior to his death, advocating for social housing improvement, as stated by the EFF’s Gauteng leadership. The tragic event has led to an ongoing investigation by the South African Police Service (SAPS).

During a press briefing, Mgcini Tshwaku, the City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety MMC, gave an update on the investigation, citing confusing and dire claims surrounding the protest's unfolding. Tshwaku disclosed that Mphahlele had lost his life due to excessive blood loss from live ammunition, contradicting initial reports suggesting rubber bullets were the cause. The MMC also reported the wounding of a teenager and additional injuries to demonstrators, including a pregnant woman.

The officials' claim that JMPD failed to manage the private security properly, which led to deplorable use of excessive force, has raised serious concerns about accountability and discipline within the police ranks. Moreover, allegations that the crime scene was improperly secured have compounded the controversy.

Tshwaku told the press that the suspended officers have turned in their firearms for ballistic testing to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), hoping to clarify the source of the fatal shots.

The city's commitment to justice was emphasized, with multiple leads reportedly scrutinized by law enforcement. The officials have promised to leave no stone unturned in bringing the perpetrators to book.

At the Sankopano Community Centre in Alexandra, a memorial service witnessed the presence of EFF leadership and Johannesburg city officials, who came together to honor the memory of the late councillor.

Mphahlele, remembered as a committed community activist, has left behind a legacy of dedication to economic freedom and the betterment of Johannesburg and Alexandra residents. The EFF has pledged to support both his family and the continued quest for justice while calling for calm and discipline during the investigation.

His funeral arrangements have been scheduled for Friday, with the EFF and community members paying their final respects to a man whose life was earnestly spent in service.
