Amnesty International Urges ICC Action on Venezuela's Human Rights Crisis

In an impassioned call to action, Amnesty International issued an open letter to the International Criminal Court's (ICC) Prosecutor, Karim Khan, highlighting the alarming scale and severity of ongoing crimes in Venezuela. The global human rights organization emphasized the pressing need for decisive measures from the ICC in response to reports of unlawful killings, arbitrary detentions, and the persecution of human rights defenders under Nicolás Maduro's government.

Erika Guevara-Rosas, senior director of research, advocacy, policy, and campaigns for Amnesty International, expressed deep concern over the ICC prosecutor's inaction in the face of Venezuela's burgeoning crisis. Detailed in the communication were instances of violence by security forces and pro-government factions that resulted in numerous deaths. Amnesty also documented more than 2,000 arbitrary detentions arising from real or perceived opposition to Maduro’s regime, in a matter of just a few days.

The letter underlined the plight of human rights organizations and advocates in Venezuela who face ongoing attacks, threats, and stigmatization. These entities look to the ICC as a beacon of hope and last resort for justice amidst the government’s brutal crackdown.

This appeal for urgent attention from the ICC comes as the organization struggles to see accountability for a legacy of impunity regarding human rights violations and crimes against humanity committed by the Venezuelan government. Amnesty International insists on the necessity of an accelerated investigation into the dire situation unfolding in Venezuela.

The organization’s requests are specific: a preventive statement from Prosecutor Khan to dissuade further international crimes; public endorsement of Venezuelan NGOs and human rights defenders; and a condemnation of the ongoing attacks against them. Amnesty International advocates for Prosecutor Khan to take a firm and immediate stance against the injustice besieging the nation, signaling the crucial role that the ICC must play in championing human rights and aiding Venezuelan civil society.
