Gqeberha Law Enforcement Clamps Down on Crime: Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Leads Charge

Gqeberha witnessed a notable upsurge in law enforcement activities as Eastern Cape’s top cop Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene spearheaded a series of operations aimed at making the metro safer. The intensified crime-fighting campaign dubbed Operation Shanela made its presence felt across the Nelson Mandela Bay District by targeting crime hotspots such as Gelvandale, Kwadwesi, and Motherwell.

The strategy was simple but effective: increase police visibility, conduct firearm compliance checks, employ stop-and-search tactics, execute search warrants, and reinforce blue light patrols. From Wednesday leading into the weekend, police, along with other stakeholders, fanned out across the district, determined to lay down the law.

The dedication of the police force bore fruit particularly on Saturday when they apprehended three suspects for possession of two stolen unlicensed firearms. Investigations revealed that these firearms had been reported stolen in the past, confirming the police's suspicions. What followed was a plethora of actions that included compliance inspections at liquor outlets, anti-drug operations, and the rounding up of more than seventy individuals implicated in various crimes.

Equally notable were the traffic enforcement's efforts that saw eleven motorists arrested for driving under the influence. In light of the seized firearms, police are now working to analyze them through ballistics to support the upcoming court proceedings against the suspects.

In a declarative message, Lt Gen Mene affirmed the police force's commitment to public safety and stressed a zero-tolerance approach towards crime. In her own words, Mene's message was clear: "playtime is over for criminals." The operations, which will be ongoing, are a testament to the police’s resolve to clamp down on persistent criminal activities within Nelson Mandela Bay.
