In a dramatic operation, East London Detectives and K9 units, backed by private security, mounted a successful rescue of a Chinese national who had been abducted last week in King Williams Town. The victim, whose identity has been withheld for security reasons, was discovered on the morning of August 1, 2024, at a residential property in Mooiplaas, on the outskirts of East London.

The police operation homed in on the residence owned by a local taxi operator, thanks to actionable intelligence. A tactical and cautious entry by the authorities resulted in the victim's safe recovery, who had been held captive since Saturday, July 27, 2024. Thankfully, the rescued individual was found unharmed.

Prior to the rescue, the kidnappers had demanded, and received, a ransom amounting to R350,000, paid by the victim's brother. Tragically, the brother himself was abducted and remains unaccounted for as investigations continue, with additional arrests anticipated.

During the raid, law enforcement officials did not only secure the release of the hostage but also seized a shotgun, a cache of ammunition in multiple calibres, a safe, and items believed to be stolen.

Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli applauded the prompt arrest of the suspects, an action that occurred less than a week after the kidnapping. Lt. Gen. Mene emphasised the importance of speed in apprehending those behind such crimes, asserting the police's commitment to address and deter the threat of kidnappings forcefully.

The suspects, who have been incarcerated, face charges of kidnapping, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and possession of suspected stolen goods. Details of their court appearance at East London Magistrate's Court will be announced.
