Western Cape Police Crackdown Results in Arrests Over Unlicensed Firearms

In the latest crackdown on Saturday, 27 July 2024, two separate incidents led to the arrest of two men, each found in possession of a firearm without the necessary permits or licenses.

In the first incident, Manenberg police, while on patrol close to Renoster Walk, noticed a suspicious man who immediately fled upon seeing the patrol vehicle. The chase ensued on foot, leading to the suspect's apprehension inside a dwelling on Rio Grande Walk. The man, a 35-year-old, was found with a Beretta 9mm pistol. Upon failing to present a valid firearm license, he was subsequently arrested and booked for possessing an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Simultaneously, another police unit was acting on intelligence in Lentegeur regarding a certain individual reputed to have a firearm illegally. Law enforcement officers executed a search of a residence on Venter Street in Mandalay. There they uncovered a pistol along with ammunition. The man present, who turned out to be the subject of their investigation, could not provide a legitimate rationale for having the firearm sans a license. He was taken into custody for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Both suspects are set to face the judicial system, with court appearances scheduled at the Athlone Magistrate's Court and Mitchells Plain Magistrate's Court. Their arrests underscore the determination of the local police in their mission to purge communities of illegal firearms that pose a threat to the safety and security of the residents.

The Western Cape police's actions direct attention to the critical need for stringent control over firearm ownership and the necessity for individuals to comply with legislation regarding the lawful possession of firearms in South Africa.
