Operation Vala Umgodi: 22 Arrested in Anti-Illegal Mining Sweep in Northern Cape

In an extensive joint operation, coined Operation Vala Umgodi, authorities in the Northern Cape have taken significant strides to combat the scourge of illegal mining activities in the region. The operations, which commenced on Thursday, 25 July 2024, saw the South African Police Service (SAPS) collaborating closely with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the Department of Home Affairs Immigration Services, and other law enforcement units, resulting in the arrest of 22 individuals implicated in illegal mining and various immigration offences.
