The Northern Cape has seen a significant crackdown on criminal activity in a week-long operation known as Operation Shanela. From Monday, 22 July to Sunday, 28 July 2024, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has been on full alert, deploying an increased number of officers to various areas across the province and successfully arresting 407 suspects for a range of offences, from violent crimes to regulatory violations.

Operation Shanela has been proactive in addressing serious crimes like murder, assault, robbery, and gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), as well as addressing the narcotics problem in the region with drug-related arrests. The operation comes at a time when the public is increasingly concerned about crime rates, and police visibility has been a key strategy in curtailing illegal activities.

Throughout this period, SAPS conducted comprehensive activities including vehicle checkpoints (VCPs), where a total of 2,621 vehicles and 5,457 persons underwent stop-and-search procedures. Other techniques employed by the officers included high visibility foot and vehicle patrols, compliance inspections at various businesses, and targeted tracing operations by detectives to apprehend suspects with warrants out for their arrest.

High traffic areas such as shopping centers, malls, and identified crime hotspots were patrolled, resulting in 2,661 patrols to increase the sense of safety among residents and deter potential criminal acts. Compliance inspections were not limited to urban areas; they extended to mines and farms, enhancing the security measures across different sectors.

During these activities, SAPS officers confiscated large amounts of alcohol from illegal shebeens, illegal drugs, and dangerous weapons. Livestock and other suspected stolen goods were also recovered in areas known for high crime rates. This indicates that Operation Shanela not only targeted crimes against persons but also aimed to prevent the trade of illegal goods.

The operation also saw detectives in the five districts successfully tracking down 219 daily wanted suspects, thereby cutting down the space for escaped criminals to continue their operations. Another 178 arrests were made for serious crimes, reflecting the robust reaction capacity of the law enforcement agencies involved in the operation.

Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola acknowledged the success of Operation Shanela and expressed her gratitude to the members of the SAPS, the community, and all supporting law enforcement agencies. The commendation highlighted the importance of community engagement and inter-agency collaboration in successfully combating crime.

Operation Shanela comes as a reassurance to the communities in the Northern Cape, tightening the grip on crime and reinforcing the rule of law through stringent police action and collaborative efforts. The operation's results also serve as a warning to criminals that law enforcement agencies are vigilant and resolute in their mission to maintain public order and safety.
