In a concerted effort to curb criminal activity within the Mangaung Metro area, a specialized police operation codenamed Operation Shanela has been making notable strides. On July 26, 2024, the latest series of high-density deployment operations resulted in significant arrests and drug seizures, highlighting the ongoing battle against contraband and criminal undertakings in Bloemfontein and surrounding areas.
The briefing for Operation Shanela was conducted earlier, with Colonel Edward Kruger leading the joint parade. The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with the Department of Home Affairs, has been actively pursuing an intelligence-driven strategy across the district. The operational concepts focused on stop-and-search tactics, aiming to intercept suspects equipped with breaking implements, thereby anticipating and preventing instances of cable theft, theft from vehicles, and burglaries. Moreover, the operations targeted to arrest individuals carrying illegal firearms, ammunition, and illicit drugs, while also enforcing compliance with the National Road Traffic Act and cracking down on undocumented persons.
A key breakthrough occurred when members of the Tactical Response Team, following up on intelligence reports, executed a search operation targeting a Silver Ford Ranger vehicle in Maphisa Road, Phahameng, near Bloemfontein. The operation led to the arrest of three individuals: two men, aged 36 and 50, along with a 26-year-old, found in possession of 576 star-etched Mandrax tablets, with a street value estimated at R32,000. The apprehended suspects were charged with drug possession and are currently held in police custody, pending their appearance at the Bloemfontein Magistrate Court.
The police operation extended its reach to the Kagisanong Police Station area, where six undocumented individuals were arrested. Additionally, two drivers were taken into custody for operating a vehicle under the influence of intoxicating substances, in violation of the National Road Traffic Act. The suspects involved in these offenses are also slated to appear before the magistrate soon.
As Operation Shanela continues, it sends a strong message that the authorities are intensifying their efforts to maintain law and order within the Mangaung Metro. By implementing such high-density deployment operations, SAPS and the Department of Home Affairs are working to ensure community safety and security by proactively dismantling criminal networks and their operations within the region.
