The Ritavi Police have initiated a comprehensive search for two unidentified individuals following a brazen attack on security officers in the Nkowankowa Township of the Mopani District. The alarming incident, which occurred on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, involved the suspects assaulting security personnel, stealing a firearm, and forcefully taking their vehicle.

This violent occurrence unfolded shortly after midnight when the security officers, who had just finished a patrol shift, were ambushed outside the Eskom Substation in Nkowankowa Section A. As they awaited entry back onto the premises, the situation swiftly became perilous with the sound of a gunshot piercing the night air.

Two armed assailants appeared from the shadows with one shattering the vehicle's passenger window using a firearm. They then proceeded to threaten the officers, terrifyingly demanding their service weapons and cellphones, succeeding in pilfering one firearm and taking the officers' mobile phones.

Amidst the assault, as the security officers' colleagues opened the gate, one officer saw an opportunity to make an escape and alert the authorities. Meanwhile, the remaining security personnel were coerced into the guardroom, where they were confined.

The assailants took off with the company vehicle but it was later found deserted a few kilometers away from the scene. The trapped victims, once isolated, managed to free themselves by breaking a window, promptly alerting the police about the harrowing ordeal.

Police have filed cases of carjacking and armed robbery as they continue to investigate the crime. They are fervently appealing to the public for assistance. Anyone with pertinent information is encouraged to reach out to Investigating Officer Warrant Officer Tonny Baloyi at 082 3199 699 or anonymously report to the SAPS Crime Stop number at 08600 10111. The swift and effective response of the Ritavi Police underscores the severity of the situation and the importance of community cooperation in addressing and preventing violent crimes.
