In a consistent clampdown on cash-in-transit (CIT) heists and the circulation of illegal firearms, Eastern Cape Police have made significant inroads, apprehending a suspect and seizing numerous weapons. The ongoing efforts underscore the fighting spirit of the law enforcement officers against the scourge of violent crimes that plague communities.

In the twilight hours of July 23, 2024, the Tactical Response Team (TRT) in Mthatha, part of the OR Tambo District, exercised a search warrant at a residence in Upper Ngqwarha location, Mqanduli. Following intelligence pertaining to a CIT robbery that took place earlier that month, the TRT's diligence led to the apprehension of a 32-year-old male found possessing an Uzi rifle with ammunition – a weapon previously pilfered from a Mqanduli private security company in February 2021.

The intensive interrogations of the suspect yielded further results, directing the police to another scene – a homestead in Mpunzana location, Mthatha. Here, a silver grey Toyota Corolla was located, parked and abandoned, its presence in the garage directly tied to a business robbery in Sterkspruit. The recovery of the vehicle marks another drop in the ocean of the province's rampant organized crime.

Legal proceedings will see the suspect arraigned on charges including the possession of an unlicensed firearm and illegal possession of ammunition. Additional charges, specifically tailored to the CIT robbery, attempted murder, and malicious damage to property, can soon be anticipated. The physical evidence, including the recovered Uzi rifle and the implicated automobile, undergoes meticulous analysis and is primed for contributing to the prosecution's case.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, commended the arrest and the operative performances. Lt Gen Mene confirmed the unwavering resolve of the designated CIT task team, a blend of the TRT, Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), and a specialized tracking unit, in addressing and mitigating the tide of organized crime. The commitment from the police to decisively tackle these categories of crime activity remains resolute, ensuring that those who flout the law face the full extent of justice.

As the province strives to re-establish a sense of civility and safety within its communities, the recent achievements by the police are lauded as a testament to their unyielding dedication. Citizens are urged to continue supporting and collaborating with law enforcement by adhering to established laws and regulations, furthering collective security and prosperity.
