Cape Town Calls for Public Input on Redefined Sub-council Boundaries

In an effort to enhance local governance and service delivery efficiency, the City of Cape Town is reaching out to its residents for a final week of comments on a modified draft by-law that proposes a recalibration of sub-council boundaries within the metropolis.


The current draft by-law proposes a reduction in the number of sub-councils from 21 to 20, after extensive considerations to streamline service delivery in alignment with departments' operational frameworks. The City Council has scrutinized each sub-council's outline, identifying opportunities to bolster coordination and invoke a spirit of fiscal responsibility amidst national budget constraints.


City of Cape Town Speaker, Felicity Purchase, illuminated the prudent motives behind this reassessment, with national government budget cuts necessitating an in-depth review and subsequent adjustment of sub-council boundaries. The responsibility to guide this process was bestowed upon Alderman Matthew Kempthorne, appointed by the Executive Mayor to reconvene a multi-stakeholder committee representative of all the political factions within council.


The consultation period extends to community members, who are encouraged to delve into the proposed changes, available publicly, and contribute their perspectives on the remapping endeavor. Theresa Uys, the Mayoral Committee Member for Corporate Services, remarked on the unity and forward progress achieved during the 12 June 2024 council meeting. The council consented to the multi-party committee's boundary reconfiguration proposal, setting the stage for the all-important public commentary phase. Resident perspectives gathered in this period will be pivotal, providing the multi-party committee with a broad spectrum of insights to make informed, democratic recommendations to the council.


The deadline for submitting public input is set for the close of the month, July 30, 2024. This commences the countdown for residents to influence the final consideration of the sub-council's domain before the council finalizes its decision in the council meeting destined for August 22, 2024.
