In a recent incident that raised concerns about the safety of minors using public transport, Golden Arrow Bus Service has suspended a driver for leaving an 11-year-old boy stranded. The child, a pupil at Simon's Town Primary School, became the subject of an urgent search after his absence was noted by his mother, who promptly alerted the community through social media.
The boy's ordeal began when he was unable to present a bus ticket for his journey from Simon's Town to Makhaza in Khayelitsha, as he reportedly lost the ticket. In adherence to company policies which are usually in place to offer assistance to schoolchildren in such situations, the driver should have allowed the boy to board. However, the child was denied entry, prompting a worrisome lapse in his whereabouts on Monday afternoon.
Thankfully, the actions of law enforcement officials from Harare played a vital role in the child's safe return as they helped locate the lost boy and reunited him with his family.
Following the incident, Bronwen Dyke-Beyer, a spokesperson for Golden Arrow, confirmed that the driver involved had been suspended. The suspension comes as the company expresses its commitment to ensuring the wellbeing of all passengers, especially minors. Golden Arrow also announced an imminent review of their mechanisms related to lost scholar tickets to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
As a response to the community's concerns and the potential risks faced by unaccompanied minors, Dyke-Beyer has urged parents to take proactive measures. This includes ensuring that their children have ways of contacting them in emergencies and are well-informed on what actions to take if they are unable to board their scheduled bus.
The incident highlights the critical issue of child safety on public transport and the responsibilities of service providers to adhere to their own protocols, especially when they involve the security of school-going children. Golden Arrow's swift response and their initiative to review and reinforce related policies will be closely observed by the public and the families relying on their services.
