The South African Police Service (SAPS) Mopani District Tracking Team, along with Hoedspruit detectives, have cracked a major crime case leading to the arrest of a 27-year-old male in connection with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and personal property. On Saturday, 20 July 2024, authorities detained the suspect in the Hoedspruit area following a detailed police operation.
The case unfolded when a concerned family reported a missing person case. Lucas Leshata Marape, a 31-year-old man destined for a new job at a mine in Burgersfort, Sekhukhune District, disappeared without notice on 11 June 2024. Marape's absence and failure to report to his work post prompted serious concerns about his whereabouts.
Acting upon the missing person report, diligent inquiries were initially made by the police with a friend and former colleague of the victim, who was last known to reside in Phalaborwa. The interrogation of the acquaintance led the police to the suspect, who was found in illegal possession of the victim’s belongings. Among the recovered items were Marape's vehicle, a wallet containing his bank cards, and a cellphone. In a grim turn of events, bloodstains were discovered in the boot of the recovered vehicle, pointing to something far more sinister than a simple case of theft.
With continued police work, the suspect eventually revealed the location of Marape’s body, which was tragicly discovered in the bushes at Madadi Tshugulu village, within the Orighstad policing area. The victim had suffered fatal stab wounds, and the severity of the crime scene was immediately evident. Emergency responders were called to the scene, where they pronounced Marape deceased.
The apprehended individual is now facing serious charges related to the possession of stole property. To uncover further specifics about Marape’s unfortunate demise, a post-mortem examination is scheduled, which aims to firmly establish the cause of death.
In the procedural aftermath, separate cases have been opened: a murder case has been filed at Namakgale Police Station, and the cases relevant to the possession of suspected stolen property and the motor vehicle are being handled at Hoedspruit Police Station. The suspect is set to make a court appearance at the Hoedspruit Magistrate's Court on Monday, 22 July 2024.
The incident has shaken the local community and heightened awareness around security and crime prevention. As the suspect awaits his day in court, SAPS continues their thorough investigation, ensuring that all leads are followed and justice is served for Lucas Leshata Marape.
