The SAPS New Brighton unit has made a significant arrest in connection with the murder of Marlene Prinsloo, a 27-year-old woman tragically killed in an incident on the 22nd of June, 2024 in New Brighton, Gqeberha. The Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Major General Vuyisile Ncata, praised the rapid response of the investigating officer, which led to this development.
Marlene Prinsloo lost her life in a horrific tow truck confrontation and her boyfriend sustained injuries. The events unfolded late at night when the couple, stationed at Kings Beach in their tow truck, was approached by a man requesting help to free his Toyota Corolla stuck in the sea sand. After towing the vehicle, they followed the man, who was in the company of another male and two females, to receive payment.
Upon stopping in Mtiya Street, a dispute over payment arose, resulting in a gunshot being fired. Prinsloo was fatally wounded, and her boyfriend, in an attempt to flee the scene, drove to a private hospital in Korsten. There, it was confirmed that Prinsloo had succumbed to her injuries, while her boyfriend was admitted for medical care.
The continued efforts of law enforcement since the incident paid off when a 34-year-old suspect was apprehended on the 19th of July, 2024, at a residence in Joe Slovo, a locality in the Gqeberha area. The suspect is being detained on charges of murder and attempted murder, as detectives work diligently to build their case, signaling that more arrests are likely in the near future.
The community is reminded that the suspect will be making an initial court appearance at the New Brighton Magistrate court on Monday, 22nd July 2024.
