The battle against drug trafficking in the Western Cape saw a significant victory as the Garden Route District Crime Combatting Team and the Flying Squad, through cooperative strategy and intelligence-led policing, successfully intercepted a consignment of drugs worth an estimated R340,000. The operation unfolded on a stretch of the N2 highway known as a conduit for illicit drug movement into the coastal regions of South Africa.
In the early hours of a brisk Wednesday morning, the 17th of July 2024, officers moved swiftly on actionable intelligence regarding a blue Lexus from the Eastern Cape, suspected of ferrying drugs, heading towards George with a Gauteng Province registration number. Their vigilance was rewarded when they spotted the target vehicle as it approached the town. The officers stopped the vehicle and upon searching, discovered a hidden stash of methamphetamine, commonly known as tik, amounting to 979 grams under the passenger seat.
Without delay, the vigilant officers seized the illicit substance and apprehended the 55-year-old Tanzanian national behind the wheel. Following police procedure, the vehicle was also seized as part of the criminal investigation. The suspect's journey was cut short as he faced the legal ramifications of his actions; his travel from Eastern Cape, purposed for distribution in George, was a journey anticipated by the authorities due to a thorough and ongoing surveillance operation.
Not stopping at this single success, the same operative team executed a raid earlier in the week, on Monday, 15th July 2024, within the residential area of Lawaaikamp near Conville, George. Information led the team to a residence on Vuyani Ncamazana Street, where a search resulted in the confiscation of additional drugs, including 564 mandrax tablets and 66 grams of tik, estimated at a collective value of R66,000. A second suspect, a 39-year-old man, was arrested from this incident and faced similar charges of drug dealing.
The dual drug busts resonate with the resilience and dedication of the Garden Route police force in disrupting the flow of drugs into local communities. The Western Cape Provincial Detectives Organised Crime (Narcotics) unit has taken the lead in unraveling the networks involved in these cases. Lieutenant General (Adv.) Thembisile Patekile, Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, applauded the diligence and precision of the involved officers who demonstrated a steadfast commitment to cleansing the streets of these dangerous substances.
The arrest of both suspects serves as a stark reminder that the trade and distribution of illicit drugs will not be tolerated, and those caught in the act will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The 55-year-old is due to appear in George Magistrates' Court, where the severity of the consequences for his alleged activities will come to light.
