South African Authorities Crush Major Hydroponic Dagga Lab, Arrest Seven

In a sweeping action, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has shut down an elaborate hydroponic cannabis laboratory in Magaliesburg. Estimated to be worth around R40 million, the raid marks a significant blow to illegal drug operations in the country.

Led by Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, the Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Gauteng, the multi-agency team conducted the successful raid on the 18th of July 2024. Their target was a small holding converted into a sophisticated dagga (cannabis) production site.

The operation was the outcome of astute police work where SAPS members first operationalized crucial information regarding the illicit lab. A thorough preliminary investigation ensued, and upon confirming their suspicions, the team acquired a search warrant to raid the property.

The collaborative effort involved various specialized units including the National and Provincial Organised Crime Investigations, Crime Intelligence Counter Narcotics, Forensic Science’s Chemical Investigation Unit, National Intervention Unit, Tactical Response Team, Sedibeng and West Rand K9, as well as Gauteng Emergency Medical Services.

Upon the execution of the search warrant, a fully operational cannabis laboratory was unveiled. The officers confiscated an array of substances and paraphernalia related to drug production which included dagga plants, a collection of products, chemicals, and equipment, as well as additional illegal items like a signal jamming device and a cache of ammunition.

Lt Gen Mthombeni conveyed his strong endorsement of the operation, emphasizing the force's commitment to disrupting the drug trade in Gauteng. Praising their tenacity, Mthombeni highlighted that this takedown represented the third of its kind in recent weeks—a testament to their relentless fight against narcotics in the region.

The arrest of seven suspects, with an international representation including nationals from Scotland, Russia, Tanzania, Lesotho, and South Africa, underscores the sprawling nature of this illegal operation. Slated for the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on the 22nd of July, the suspects face severe charges including drug dealing, cultivation of dagga, possession of unlicensed ammunition, and the contravention of the Electronic Communications Act.
