According to a CNN report citing US and Western officials, an alleged Russian government plot to assassinate Armin Papperger, the CEO of the German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall, was uncovered by US intelligence early in 2024. Rheinmetall has played a significant role in supporting Ukraine's military efforts by increasing production of artillery shells and military vehicles since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

This assassination plan reportedly was not an isolated incident but part of a broader Russian agenda to eliminate European defense industry executives who have been aiding Ukraine. As a result of the intelligence received, the United States swiftly informed German officials, enabling them to safeguard Papperger.

In response to the threats, Rheinmetall released a statement affirming the implementation of "necessary measures" in collaboration with security authorities. The company, one of the largest producers of tank and artillery shells globally, heightened its operations following the conflict in Ukraine. In May 2023, Rheinmetall announced a partnership with Ukrainian company Ukroboronprom to construct and repair tanks in Ukraine, followed by future plans to establish an ammunition factory in the country.

The threats come amid a backdrop of escalating tensions. Dmitry Medvedev, ex-President of Russia and Putin ally, had uttered clear threats against any Rheinmetall facilities in Ukraine, revealing the high-stakes nature of the global arms industry and the geopolitical conflict surrounding Ukraine.

The reported assassination plot against Papperger coincides with an increase in other hostile activities, including cyberattacks and sabotage, believed to be part of Russia's hybrid warfare tactics. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock highlighted this aggressive strategy at a NATO summit, emphasizing the need for European self-protection and vigilance. Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Germany's interior ministry reinforced the commitment to address and counter threats posed by the Russian regime in cooperation with international partners.

Despite these threats, Rheinmetall has showcased its resilience. Papperger, with over three decades at the company, witnessed an attack on his garden house by alleged far-left activists – an incident that underscores the controversial and risky nature of the defense sector amidst fractious global politics.

Both Germany's domestic intelligence services and the interior ministry have declined to comment on specific intelligence reports but assert a continued stance against intimidation and towards maintaining national and international security.
