In a heart-wrenching case that has sent shockwaves through the North West community, a mother and her lover have been arrested and charged with the murder of her young son. 31-year-old Lerato Ntsimango and 26-year-old Ofense Mabeo faced the Rustenburg magistrate's court amidst allegations of having ended the four-year-old boy's life and buried him in a shallow grave.

The chilling details emerged when the child's father, separated from Ntsimango and residing in Johannesburg, inquired about his son's welfare. Neighbors had been led to believe that the boy was living with his father in the Eastern Cape. Conflicting accounts raised suspicion, culminating in a harrowing confession by the mother.

According to North West police spokesperson Capt Amanda Funani, the child had not been seen since July 2023, sparking concern amongst residents. The community's unease was palpable last week when they stood outside the local councillor's house, desperate for answers about the young boy's disappearance.

Councillor Joseph Qobeka revealed distressing allegations regarding the treatment of the child by his mother, including neglect and abuse, before the ultimate confession of murder. Ntsimango's initial claims of having placed the child in foster care in Marikana began to unravel as she admitted to the killing, imploring secrecy fearing community retribution.

The case not only centers on the horrific murder but also on deceit, with the biological father continuing to support his son financially, unaware of the grim reality. The community's anguish is palpated, as they grapple with the first trauma of its kind, facing the loss of innocence in such a gruesomely blatant manner.

The alleged actions leading to the young boy's death and the calculated cover-up have left the community of Boitekong demanding justice. As the trial proceeds, it exposes the vulnerabilities of children in fractured familial relationships and the dire consequences that can ensue when those who should protect them are the ones perpetrating harm.
