China Asserts Communication with EU on EV Tariff Consultations

Recent remarks from a European Union (EU) official alleging China's reluctance to engage in consultations over electric vehicle (EV) tariffs have been met with strong refutation from Beijing. The EU had accused China of delaying talks, while China insists on a record of proactive communication and calls for constructive dialogue.

The allegations came into the spotlight after an EU ambassador pointed to an apparent lack of initiative from China in addressing the tariffs that place tension on EU-China trade relations. However, China's Ministry of Commerce responded assertively, shedding light on a detailed history of bilateral exchanges, including face-to-face sessions and correspondence among top officials and ministries.

According to Chinese representatives, the nation has consistently opposed the EU's anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese EV imports on both bilateral and multilateral stages since its inception. Such opposition, they claim, is rooted in the belief that trade protectionism hampers the progress of the global green industry and stymies crucial automotive cooperation.

Further emphasizing the importance of a joint effort, China calls upon the EU to act earnestly in advancing the negotiation process with the aim of promptly reaching an agreement that benefits both parties. Chinese authorities remain staunch in their advocacy for the green economic shift and caution against any unilateral or protective trade moves that could weaponize economic policies.

The ongoing dispute underlines China's readiness to counteract any practices believed to unjustly target its trade interests, indicating a preparedness to implement countermeasures as deemed necessary. Amidst these tensions, the overarching goal remains clear—a resolution fostering a climate of fair trade and contributive to the green transformation of the global economy.
