Suspected Cash-in-Transit Heist Accomplice Faces Court for Firearm Offence

A suspect implicated in a cash-in-transit robbery was brought before the Tonga Magistrates Court in South Africa. Moosa Sibusiso Vilakazi, 39, appeared on charges related to the alleged mishandling of a firearm after police traced a weapon found at a crime scene back to him.

The incident in question unfolded back on 11 August 2023, when a cash-in-transit heist occurred on Malelane Road, headed towards Schoemansdal. In the aftermath, police acted on intelligence that guided them to a house suspected as the criminal's hideout. Inside the suspected safe house, investigators discovered the getaway vehicles hidden within the garage. During a meticulous search of the property, officials found a firearm placed carelessly on a bed.

Authorities seized the weapon, and after inspection, identified it through its serial number as belonging to Vilakazi. Consequently, a case was established against Vilakazi for the negligent loss of a firearm. As the investigation unfolded, the culpability of the accused was solidified, leading to the issuing and execution of a warrant for his arrest.

Vilakazi presented himself before the Tonga Magistrates Court on Thursday, 4 July 2024, shortly after his arrest. Remarkably, despite the gravity of the charges, Vilakazi was released on a warning. Furthermore, it emerged that Vilakazi is concurrently out on bail for a separate charge related to a different cash-in-transit robbery, highlighting a pattern of alleged criminal involvement.

The court saw fit to move proceedings related to this case to the Nelspruit Regional Court for the hearing scheduled on 26 July 2024. The strategy to centralise his cases suggests a necessitated, coherent approach by the judiciary to address the interconnected allegations. Police are relentlessly progressing with their inquiry, signalling that their commitment to justice remains unwavering.
