Eastern Cape SAPS Detective Celebrated for Securing Life Sentence in Murder and Rape Case

In a notable display of investigative prowess, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape has recently been under the spotlight, as their persistent dedication to bringing criminals to justice reaps substantial results. The commitment of this unit was exemplified through Detective Sergeant Thandikhaya Rigala, whose meticulous investigative work in a murder and rape case led to a commendable outcome in the courtroom.

The case began unfolding on June 23, 2023, as the lifeless body of 17-year-old Nkutlweleng Makhetha was discovered in an open field bearing multiple stab wounds. The severity of the crime prompted an intense response from the Mount Fletcher SAPS, where a case was opened, and an extensive investigation was launched.

Detective Sergeant Rigala, the investigating officer in this harrowing case, displayed remarkable acumen and determination in apprehending the culprit. Through diligent investigative practices, the officer not only arrested the 23-year-old suspect, Pholoso Letsika, but also recovered the victim's cellphone—a vital piece of evidence in the case.

Letsika was subsequently charged with murder and rape and made appearances at the Mount Fletcher Magistrate Court, where Detective Sergeant Rigala successfully argued against granting bail to the suspect. Showing the tenacity and efficiency of the justice system, it only took twelve months for the conclusion of the trial. On June 24, 2024, a year after the gruesome discovery, Letsika was confronted with the full gravity of his actions as he received a life sentence for murder and an additional ten years for rape, the terms to run concurrently.

The decision didn't conclude at the sentencing: the magistrate took a step further to deter such future crimes by ordering Letsika's name to be recorded in the National Register of Sex Offenders and additionally declared him unfit to work with children—a move that helps safeguard the community's vulnerable population.

This case did not just highlight an individual effort but also shed light on the effective collaboration between the SAPS and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Major General Lindelwa Vellem, the Joe Gqabi District Commissioner, took the opportunity to acknowledge the unparalleled investigation led by Detective Sergeant Thandikhaya Rigala.
