In a rapid response to a distressing farm robbery, members of the Ladybrand Crime Prevntion Unit in the Free State province have successfully apprehended two individuals implicated in the incident. The episode unfolded in the tranquil farmlands surrounding Ladybrand, where a sense of alarm was raised on Saturday, 6 July 2024, following a domestic breach by armed assailants.
The farmer's spouse, unable to reach her husband and distressed by multiple unsuccessful calls, escalated the matter, prompting a friend to investigate the farm's welfare. It was discovered, upon their arrival, that the farmhand, an elderly lady, remained unharmed, while the farmer himself had already been transported to a local healthcare provider due to the encounter.
The ordeal commenced when three masked intruders, equipped with firearms and gloves, intimidated the farmhand and forcefully infiltrated the homestead. The farmer, located in the bathroom at the time, also faced threats as the invaders demanded money. A fruitless ransack of two safes led to the theft of sundry valuables, including the farmer’s mobile phone, culminating in the hijacking of his Audi sedan marked with FS registration plates.
In the early hours of the following day, 7 July 2024, police officers spotted the stolen vehicle within the town boundaries, igniting a dramatic car chase. The pursuit concluded with the offenders' vehicle capsizing on a town street, which facilitated the capture of two suspects, aged 21 and 29, while a third accomplice managed to evade arrest.
These apprehended individuals are scheduled to confront legal proceedings at the Ladybrand Magistrate Court on Monday, 8 July 2024. They will respond to charges pertaining to the house robbery that left a rural community on edge. Authorities continue to appeal to the public for information that may lead to the arrest of the third suspect and are investigating the broader circumstances of this alarming farm-related crime.
