SAPS Constable and US Tourists Among Fatalities in Mpumalanga Road Collision

The Mpumalanga community is in mourning following a catastrophic car accident that claimed four lives on the R540 Road, a fact that has deeply affected both local residents and the South African Police Service (SAPS). The heartrending incident took place on Thursday, 04 July 2024, in the late afternoon and involved a marked police vehicle and a white double cab.

As per the police report, at around 16:20, a head-on collision occurred between the SAPS vehicle, driven by a 45-year-old Police Constable, and the double cab, which was carrying three civilians, including a man and a woman who were tourists from the United States. The police officer was pronounced dead at the scene, and the three civilians were swiftly transported to a nearby hospital. Initially, it was reported that two female passengers had died due to their critical injuries. Later updates confirmed the devastating news that the male occupant, who had been fighting for his life since being admitted, passed away on Friday, 05 July 2024.

Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and emphasized the gravity of the loss. "This is a tragic loss of life, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased," he commented, as the community grieves the untimely passing of the four individuals.
