Jeffrey’s Bay Man Arrested for Abalone Poaching in Garden Route National Park

In a notable effort to combat illegal wildlife trade, a man from Jeffrey's Bay has been recently detained by South African National Parks (SANParks) officials for the unlawful possession of a large quantity of abalone. The arrest took place within the Tsitsikamma section of the ecologically diverse Garden Route National Park, a region heralded for its pristine coastlines and marine reserves.

According to SANParks spokesperson, JP Louw, vigilant rangers on patrol in the area grew suspicious of potential poaching activities around Grootbank, located west of Nature's Valley. Their presence seemingly disrupted an ongoing illegal operation when four individuals, believed to be divers specifically targeting abalone, abruptly emerged from the ocean and fled the scene upon noticing the rangers.

A swift response ensued as the patrolling rangers promptly summoned additional support to aid in the capture of the suspects. The ensuing chase resulted in the detention of a 44-year-old man, while his accomplices managed to elude capture by disappearing into the dense surrounding vegetation, hindering any immediate further arrests.

Police officials, functioning in collaboration with SANParks authorities, confiscated approximately 34 kilograms of abalone. The detained suspect is currently held in Plettenberg Bay and is scheduled for a court appearance in the near future. The street value of the seized abalone is estimated to exceed R62,000, highlighting the significant economic implications of illegal wildlife harvesting.
