In a dramatic development in the case of the missing KwaZulu-Natal skipper, John "Matambu" Dercksen, the passenger he last took to sea has been arrested in Mozambique. The intense search, spearheaded by Dercksen's family and concerned citizens, has paid off, shedding new light on the March 16 disappearance.

Dercksen, who earned his nickname Matambu from the Zulu community in Sodwana Bay, vanished after a trip to sea, leaving behind his burnt fishing ski-boat, Magnum Too, found wrecked near Dobela on the Mozambican coast a day later. Michael Dercksen, his nephew, together with Michael's wife Candice Eilertsen, led the tireless search efforts that included coordination with Interpol and local authorities.

Candice Eilertsen recounted the critical role a vigilant holidaymaker played in locating the passenger, who then propelled the Mozambican officials to capture him. Rejecting the monetary reward, the holidaymaker believed in acting for society's welfare over personal gain.

Legal processes are currently underway to facilitate a smooth judicial trajectory, as affirmed by Candice. These requisite steps are crucial in ensuring a comprehensive and fair probe into the incident. Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, a national police spokesperson, has emphasized the strong inter-country law enforcement collaboration, exemplified by the arrest. The detainee, facing Mozambique's immigration-related charges, will soon be deported, although extradition isn't on the table yet.

The Dercksen family expresses profound gratitude for the support and insights from the public that have significantly contributed to this breakthrough. With the passenger's apprehension offering a glimmer of hope, the family yearns for closure, hopeful for answers or even the miraculous return of Matambu.

Candice voiced the anguish and uncertainty the family has endured, hovering in a limbo without Dercksen. For them, the possibility of Matambu's survival remains a source of solace amidst fears of a more somber resolution. The arrest has infused the family with cautious optimism as they aspire to initiate their healing journey amidst their devastating ordeal.
