Extortion and Violence in the Long-Distance Transport Sector: The Case of Bonke Makalala

Recent investigations have uncovered unsettling links between taxi boss Bonke Makalala and a series of coercive tactics aimed at removing competition in the long-distance transport industry, highlighting a grim intersection of organized crime and business in South Africa.

The amaBhungane Centre for Investigative Journalism showcased Makalala's prominent role in inducing long-distance bus companies to bow out of competing with minibus taxis, using overt intimidation and demands for extortionate payments.

Despite clear evidence, including a recording of these coercive demands presented during a 2022 meeting led by Makalala, and a subsequent high court order for a thorough investigation, law enforcement agencies have challenged the directive, muddying efforts to pursue justice.

Facing numerous charges, including murder and the illegal possession of firearms, Makalala's criminal activities appear deeply entrenched in the transport sector, from leveraging police resources to establishing a bus company serving areas effectively off-limits to competitors due to threats of violence.

Intercape CEO Johann Ferreira has been vocal in court about the menacing climate, detailing Makalala's direct involvement in the campaign against bus operators, with tactics such as setting no-go zones and creating a WhatsApp group to ensure compliance with illicit demands.

A gruesome reality emerges from Ferreira's testimony: a reign of terror that doesn't just squeeze operators for 'protection money' but also stunts the growth and operations of anyone brave enough to defy these informal regulations.

Makalala, currently in custody awaiting a bail decision, refutes all allegations. However, the puzzle pieces presented in court hint at an intricate web of racketeering, casting a long shadow over the transport industry and raising urgent questions about the state's ability or willingness to safeguard fair business practices.
