In a significant development in the high-profile AKA murder case, Sydney Mfundo Gcaba, a member of a notable KwaZulu-Natal taxi family, is now at the forefront of the investigation. The State asserts that Gcaba made a substantial payment exceeding R800,000 to Mziwethemba Gwabeni, one of the accused and a Durban businessman connected to the local taxi industry, following the death of Kiernan "AKA" Forbes and Tebello "Tibz" Motsoane.

The State's allegations surfaced during a court session at the Durban Magistrate’s Court, where investigating officer Kumaran Pillay provided an affidavit stating Gcaba had transferred the funds into Gwabeni’s business account a mere day after the murder. The business account in question belongs to Bright Circle Pty Ltd, a company where Gcaba holds the position of sole director.

Upon receipt of the money, Gwabeni is said to have distributed R133,000 to each of his co-accused. These transactions were accompanied by communication between Gwabeni and Gcaba as shown by their cellphone records shortly before the transfer was initiated. The payment, curiously marked under "consults" in the transaction reference, raises suspicions as no business relationship between the two men could be established by the State.

If substantiated, such a transaction could be of great significance to the case, potentially pointing to a paid arrangement in relation to the murder. The impact of these accusations affects not only the individuals directly involved but also brings significant attention to the broader context including the infamous reputation associated with taxi business dealings in the region.

As the community reels from the beloved musician and entertainer’s untimely death, this case continues to unravel layers of complexity, with the recent revelation of the alleged financial dealings bringing the investigation into sharper focus. The revelation has further fueled public and media speculation about the motives and players behind the tragic incident.

The State’s case against the accused is expected to progress as they delve deeper into the financial and communicative exchanges that could unlock the truth behind the double homicide. For now, the Gcaba family, the taxi industry, and a nation of fans await the outcomes of a judicial process tasked with uncovering the full extent of the tragedy and delivering justice for Forbes and Motsoane.
