Trio Apprehended in Mthatha for High-Profile CIT Heists by The Hawks

In a significant breakthrough against high stakes crime, the South African Directorate for Priority Crimes Investigations, better known as the Hawks, has successfully taken into custody three individuals implicated in a series of cash-in-transit (CIT) heists in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. The arrests occurred in the early morning hours of Thursday, showcasing a proactive approach by the authorities against such complex and violent crimes.

The individuals, whose ages range from 30 to 56, were apprehended following intelligence-driven operations by various units including the Hawks' Mthatha-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, Tactical Response Team (TRT), and Mthatha Local Record Centre (LCRC). The precise coordination among these entities underscores the seriousness with which the authorities are tackling the surge in CIT robberies, a phenomenon that causes significant financial loss and undermines public security.

Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, serving as spokesperson for the Hawks, shared that the suspects are expected to be presented before the Tsolo Magistrate's Court. During the operation, it was reported that the officers executed a meticulous search, spanning several residences. One homestead yielded immediate results with the arrest of a suspect at his home. Continuing their raid, they managed to secure another suspect found with a licensed 9mm pistol. The third suspect was also captured with an unlicensed 9mm pistol, the serial number of which had been filed off, along with live rounds of ammunition. Although the fourth homestead did not result in an arrest, the authorities confiscated cash and two 9mm pistols, potentially pivotal evidence in their ongoing investigation.
