The Unresolved Disappearance of Sodwana Bay Skipper Involves Interpol and Dismisses Rumors

Sodwana Bay, a serene spot known for its maritime activities in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, has recently been shrouded in mystery due to the disappearance of local skipper, John Matambu. Nicknamed the “Legend of Sodwana Bay” for his expertise in navigating the waters, Matambu vanished on March 16 while on a charter trip with an unidentified man, leaving behind his vessel, MAGNUM TOO, ashen and wrecked on a beach near Ponta Dobela in Mozambique.

The initial days following the incident saw a flurry of activity as search operations commenced for the well-respected skipper. As these efforts entered their fifth day, Interpol, along with the Mozambique police attaché, stepped in to assist. Despite this international cooperation, the search has so far yielded no signs of Matambu.

Adding to the family's distress was the spread of unfounded rumors concerning the case. A recent article from the Zululand Observer that a "person of interest" had been apprehended was swiftly dispelled by both the family and Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda, leaving the family and authorities focused solely on the facts of the investigation.

Candice Eilertsen, Matambu's niece, expressed the emotional toll these false reports have taken on the family, stating that they only serve to hinder the search and give rise to misplaced hope. Police and other concerned agencies, such as the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), are worried about the possibility of foul play, given the absence of a customary check-in from the skipper and the suspicious identity of the passenger who chartered the boat arriving on a motorbike.

Craig Lambinon, a spokesperson for the NSRI, shared concerns about the mysterious circumstances that led to the boat being burned and beached, emphasizing the cooperation between various organizations in the mission to decipher the events. The South African Police Service (Saps) Sea Borderline Control, Police Search and Rescue, Transnet National Ports Authority, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, and local community entities have all been actively participating in the search and investigatory efforts.

The case of John Matambu has swiftly escalated from local concern to an international affair, drawing together a coalition of forces determined to uncover the truth behind his sudden and concerning disappearance. As the search continues, those closest to Matambu remain hopeful for a resolution.
