In an incident drawing national attention, ANC chair of KwaZulu-Natal, Siboniso Duma, is facing calls for a traditional apology to Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini following a public altercation with Zulu traditional prime minister Thulasizwe Buthelezi at a royal event. The clash, observed by President Cyril Ramaphosa and other dignitaries, has sparked a debate on the intersection of politics and traditional protocols.

The scuffle ensued during the commemoration of King Dinuzulu kaCetshwayo in KwaCeza when Duma prematurely interrupted Buthelezi, snatching the microphone and accusing him of politicizing the event. This breach of protocol not only caused a stir among attendees but has also been highlighted as a disrespectful act towards the Zulu royal household.

According to the Amabutho regiment's commander, Sipho Mhlongo, Duma's apology should extend beyond verbal expressions of regret. He emphasized the traditional practice that accompanying one's apology to the king with a specific number of cows is a necessary form of penance to "cleanse embarrassment" and restore honor.

Mhlongo further clarified that Duma is not barred from the royal house, but there is an expectation for him to demonstrate his sincerity through the appropriate cultural gestures without delay. He highlighted the essential separation of political affairs from the royal house's matters and expressed the need for universal respect towards traditional leaders by political figures of various affiliations.

These sentiments echo the frustration expressed by Mhlongo over the lack of respect for traditional processes and the unfortunate blending of political disputes into royal affairs. Duma's actions have been qualified as "degrading" and not in keeping with the dignified approach expected in the context of the royal house proceedings.

This incident has raised broader questions about the role that contemporary political dynamics should play in cultural and traditional settings. The Zulu royal family has often been seen as a symbol of unity and cultural heritage, leading to calls for politicians to exercise greater discretion when navigating these delicate interactions.

In the wake of these events, the public has turned to social media to express their opinions. Many concur with Mhlongo's stance on the need for traditional amends, including a suggestive cow fine, asserting the importance of upholding respect for the monarchy, and distinctively separating the political sphere from traditional engagements.
