The tranquility of Hartbeespoort Dam was disrupted by a tragic incident this weekend when a 40-year-old man failed to resurface after jumping into the water from a boat. Following nearly 48 hours of relentless searching, police divers on Monday located the body of the man who was reported missing on Saturday afternoon during a leisure cruise.
The incident took place around 2.45 pm when, according to police reports, the man leaped into the water to find relief from the scorching temperatures in North West. While the outing involved seven passengers, two women also entered the water after him. They were rescued without harm, but the man tragically disappeared beneath the surface; a turn of events that shifted the day from recreation to rescue operation.
Police spokesperson Col Adéle Myburgh reported that between 12.15 pm and 12.30 pm on Monday, the search team found the man's body in Hartbeespoort Dam. Continuing, she stated, “We are investigating an inquest to determine the cause of death.”
Myburgh disclosed that earlier the same day, the man had jumped into the water to cool off and managed to climb back onto the boat unaided, confirming his ability to swim. “It seems the second time he jumped off the boat to cool down, that is when he couldn’t come back up again," Myburgh expressed the mystery surrounding the unfortunate incident. Speculations about potential causative factors such as a heart attack or cramp have been made, yet only an autopsy can definitively establish the cause of death.
In aiding with the search, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) stated the man went missing near the Caribbean Estate, in proximity to the Randburg Bridge. Arthur Crewe, the station commander of NSRI Hartbeespoort Dam, clarified that the boat was stationary during the time of the incident.
Hope marked the earlier hours of Monday morning as the man's brother spoke to eNCA, voicing the family's anticipation of finding the missing man alive against the odds. “We are hopeful we will find him," the brother said, positing that he could be in a coma or experiencing some other medical issue. Tragically, this hope was not met with the outcome for which the family braced themselves.
The recovery has cast a shadow over the Hartbeespoort community and serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of aquatic activities. Authorities continue to urge the public to exercise caution during recreational outings and to be attentive to the safety of all participants.
