Durban Warehouse Raid: Police Nab Suspect for Illicit Alcohol Production

In a significant operation against unlawful commercial activities, Durban police have made a noteworthy arrest at a warehouse in Verulam suspected of being the site of an illegal alcohol production operation. On Friday, a 64-year-old businessman was apprehended during the raid wherein police confiscated a massive quantity of ethanol, the key component in the production of various types of alcoholic beverages.

This decisive police action came after intelligence was gathered about a group purportedly engaged in the manufacturing of illicit alcohol. The suspect now faces multiple criminal charges, including the operation of an illegal micro distillery, unlawful possession of a vast amount of ethanol, and contravention of South Africa's stringent Liquor Act.

The raid conducted by the Durban police revealed the presence of several large drums brimming with ethanol within the premises of the warehouse located in the Ottawa area of Verulam. Upon further investigation, the owner of this warehouse failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the possession of such a substantial quantity of ethanol. His inability to account for the ethanol led to his immediate arrest.

The confiscated ethanol, approximately 12,000 litres in volume, is estimated to be worth around R1 million. This significant find aptly demonstrates the scale of the illegal operation and reflects the potential financial incentive behind such illicit activities.

Major-General Makhozazana Victoria Kheswa, the EThekwini district commissioner, praised the exceptional teamwork that made the successful raid possible. She highlighted the importance of removing dangerous substances meant for the creation of illegal alcohol from the marketplace, noting the serious health risks unregulated alcoholic substances pose to consumers. The distillation and sale of alcohol without proper licensing and adherence to safety standards can result in the circulation of products that may harm or even prove fatal to consumers.
