Ambassador Chen Xiaodong’s Farewell: Reflecting on China-South Africa Diplomatic Milestones

Ambassador Chen Xiaodong's tenure as the representative of the People’s Republic of China to South Africa will be remembered for his commitment to strengthening the socio-economic bonds between the two nations. Serving in the role for over three years, Ambassador Chen has been integral in fostering solidarity, particularly as the world grappled with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Upon his arrival in September 2020, Ambassador Chen's first official duty was to facilitate the provision of emergency anti-pandemic supplies through the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation, signifying China's solidarity with South Africa during a time of global crisis. President Cyril Ramaphosa commended China for being one of the nations willing to support Africa when other countries were hesitant to share vaccine resources.

Furthermore, Ambassador Chen played a pivotal role in rendering assistance to the South African Navy with crucial medical supplies and in inaugurating the South African National Defence College E-library. His breadth of contributions also reached local communities, signified by donations of school shoes and educational materials, further easing the burden on impoverished sectors of society.

Employment, a significant issue in South Africa, was another area that benefited from Ambassador Chen's efforts. His encouragement led Chinese enterprises in South Africa to organize a job fair in 2022, which was met with governmental acclaim. These initiatives demonstrate a shared commitment to advancing technological expertise and increasing the employment quotient.

In his valediction, Ambassador Chen exuded heartfelt appreciation for the beauty and hospitality of South Africa.
