Mason Greenwood, the embattled Manchester United forward, has encountered yet another professional setback as his image rights company TSM Sports has been voluntarily placed into liquidation, according to the latest reports from the Mirror. The dissolution of the company underscores the sustained damage to Greenwood’s commercial viability following a string of personal controversies.

Manchester United's one-time England international, who currently finds playing time on loan at Getafe in Spain, had established TSM Sports back in 2019 to manage his image rights – a lucrative aspect of a modern footballer's income stream. The company was intended to bolster the young striker's earning potential beyond the pitch. However, the recent unsavory events in Greenwood's personal life have precipitated a decline in his marketability, which is now culminating in the liquidation of the business.

Greenwood’s image took a significant hit in January of 2022 when he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape. The fallout was immediate and severe, with sportswear giant Nike terminating its sponsorship deal with the footballer. The arrest and ensuing negative publicity inevitably eroded his brand value and posed a direct threat to any business related to his persona, including TSM Sports.

According to documents from Companies House, a voluntary liquidator was appointed at the beginning of this month to manage the affairs of TSM Sports. The papers reveal that Greenwood, listed as a company director, is still set to profit from the liquidation process, expecting to receive £508,862, equivalent to approximately R12.3 million.

Despite the financial gain from the liquidation, Greenwood’s future in the sport remains in jeopardy. After the charges against him were dropped, he rejoined the professional football circuit. However, his prospects at Manchester United appear bleak. The new co-owner of the Red Devils, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, has indicated that a reassessment of Greenwood's future will occur. Yet, recent reports from The Athletic suggest that Greenwood himself might not favor a return to his parent club should the opportunity arise.

As the company undergoes liquidation, Greenwood’s position serves as a cautionary tale for athletes everywhere, illustrating how personal misconduct can spread beyond one's private life to professional and financial realms.

The challenges Greenwood faces point to the growing significance of ethically grounded personal brand management for sports stars. They are publicly scrutinized figures whose actions often carry weighty consequences for their careers and related business ventures. In a time when athletes frequently become brands in their own right, professional missteps can reverberate through every related enterprise, and Greenwood’s case has become a testament to this reality.

The liquidation of TSM Sports is a strategic move that encapsulates the broader trajectory of Greenwood's career – one that was once promising but now looks uncertain. As he continues his loan tenure in Spain, the consequences of years past follow him, and only time will tell if he can rebuild his image and recover his standing both on and off the field.
