MKP Voting District Coordinator Vusimuzi Ntuli Assassinated in uMlazi: Political Unrest Grips KZN

The killing of Vusimuzi "Blesser" Ntuli, a member of the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) and voting district coordinator, at Tehuis Hostel in uMlazi, KwaZulu-Natal, has ignited fears of escalating political violence in the region. According to KZN police spokesperson Thenjisiwe Ngcobo, Ntuli was shot dead on Saturday, 2 March 2024, while with a friend in the parking lot of the hostel he coordinated.

This assassination has not only prompted a rather bleak introspection on the current political climate in the area but also put into perspective the intensity of political rivalry which might be teetering on the edge of calamity. While the motive behind Ntuli's murder remains unconfirmed, the circumstances have given rise to speculations of it being a politically motivated hit, given the recent history of intimidation and violent altercations between the African National Congress (ANC) and the nascent MKP.

The MKP, having emerged from the sidelines and been active only since December last year, has been a strong advocate for the ideals and visions of former President Jacob Zuma. With this political undercurrent in play, the party has experienced friction and resistance from other political organizations, notably the ANC, leading to multiple incidents of hostility, as reported by City Press, including 40 instances of intimidation.

The diaspora of distress is not limited to the MKP, but it affects the broader society in KZN, which has had its share of political strife in the past. It is a region still healing from previous bouts of politically charged violence, and the latest developments are an unwelcome déjà vu.

Political analyst Bheki Mngomezulu called on leaders to exercise caution and restraint in their rhetoric, urging them to recognize the power of words in either breeding harmony or sewing discord. Mngomezulu's cautionary words come with the weight of history behind them, as KZN has been a hotspot for political tensions that could quickly spiral out of control.

In response to the tragedy, the MKP Umlazi task team has announced a six-day mourning period for Ntuli, lauding him as a substantial political figure whose influence provided security and comfort to the Umlazi District. At the same time, Nhlamulo Ndlela, spokesperson for the MKP, has made a passionate plea for political tolerance.

The party also announced that a memorial service and funeral are to be held in Nkandla, the rural homestead that also houses former president Zuma.

Accusations and speculations aside, what remains clear is that the death of Vusimuzi Ntuli is a loss to not only his family and the MKP but also a concerning indication of the simmering tensions beneath the surface of KZN's political landscape. It is a stark reminder of the fragility of peaceful coexistence in a politically diverse South Africa and a warning of the importance of dialogue over violence.
