Gugulethu Infill Housing Project Achieves Milestone with New BNG Home Handovers

In a significant stride towards alleviating the housing crisis in Cape Town, the City has reached a pivotal milestone with the successful completion and handover of Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes, forming part of the ambitious Gugulethu Infill housing project. The joyous occasion, which took place on March 1, had Human Settlements Mayoral Committee Member, Councillor Carl Pophaim, and city officials in attendance, celebrating the fruition of a project that promises to transform lives in the local communities of Gugulethu and Nyanga.

Spanning two strategic sites at Erf 8448 in Gugulethu and Mau Mau in Nyanga, the project has navigated turbulent waters, overcome challenges and, showing a last surge of resilience, is now poised to deliver 1004 homes in total to qualifying beneficiaries. Councillor Pophaim praised the project's success and reaffirmed the City's commitment to social development through inclusive housing opportunities for those most in need.

With the City of Cape Town adopting full control over the project's trajectory, a renewed sense of progress has surfaced. This pivot has been marked by the handover and witnessed by project recipients who will now enjoy the security and comfort of new homes. The breakdown of the project details an allocation of 570 units at the Gugulethu site and 434 at the Mau Mau site, with an impressive 131 units already handed over at the latter to deserving families.
