UN Report Unveils Atrocities by Rapid Support Forces in Darfur Amidst Sudan's Turmoil

A shocking report to the United Nations Security Council unveils harrowing acts of violence and brutality in Sudan's West Darfur region at the hands of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and their allied militias. Obtained by The Associated Press, the report paints a bleak picture of the situation, which could be classified as war crimes and crimes against humanity. The RSF, an Arab-dominated force, has targeted African civilians, especially the Masalit ethnic group, in large-scale ethnic killings and widespread acts of rape.

Centuries-old ethnic tensions have re-ignited, with the crisis intensifying since April, following a break of hostilities between Sudan's army and the RSF, leading to street combat in the capital, Khartoum, and spreading violence to other regions. However, the situation in Darfur has taken a distinctively sinister turn, with the RSF asserting control over four of Darfur's five states. This has involved not only violence but a complex network of financial operations linking dozens of companies, enhancing their grip on the region.

Accessibility to Darfur has been impacted, with humanitarian aid and services critically damaged. In one instance, Geneina—the capital of West Darfur—witnessed the massacre of an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 individuals, as noted by intelligence sources. Alongside these atrocities, the RSF and its affiliates have engaged in devastating sexual violence, with women and girls as young as 14 being targeted, some even within United Nations facilities under RSF control.

Prominent community members of African ethnicity have faced executions, and healthcare facilities in Darfur have been destroyed, drastically undermining essential services for the civilian population and resulting in further deaths.

United States Ambassador to the U.N., Linda Thomas-Greenfield, condemned the reported abuses, expressing her disappointment at the lack of adequate international response and attention to the Sudanese crisis. She called for immediate action to alleviate human suffering, hold perpetrators accountable, and cease the conflict in Sudan.

With a humanitarian crisis of significant proportions, the international community faces an urgent call to respond to these revelations, ensuring that the necessary aid and support reach the affected populations and that efforts are undertaken to restore peace and justice in Sudan.
