Complicating matters further, during the scuffles, Mayor Ngodwana's phone mysteriously vanished, casting another shadow over the council proceedings. Surveillance footage appeared to show a councillor donned in EFF's recognizable red overalls snatching what is assumed to be the mayor’s phone from his desk. While metro police were called in to defuse the situation, leading to the red berets being escorted out, the whereabouts of the phone remained unknown.

The ANC at the city level confirmed that the incident had been reported to the police, describing the event as a theft and expressed optimism that the mayor’s phone would be recovered. ANC caucus chair Doctor Xhakaza informed that law enforcement was actively pursuing the case, although no updates on the retrieval of the phone have been provided as of yet.

Meanwhile, as the political quagmire continues, the mooted vote of no confidence against the mayor is expected to be scheduled anew. This renewed push could further inflame tensions within a council that has already shown signs of deep divisiveness and dysfunction.
