Soweto Woman Charged With Child's Murder Faces Court as Community Seeks Justice

The Protea community in Soweto is grappling with a heinous crime involving the death of young Keeya Mbulawa, whose life was cruelly snuffed out and thrust back into the spotlight as her alleged assailant faced court proceedings. Nonhle Matsebula, a Swazi national, appeared briefly at the Protea Magistrate’s Court on a grim Friday, with charges of premeditated murder and kidnapping looming over her.

Matsebula, a former tenant at the Mbulawa family's residence, is accused of committing an incomprehensible crime against four-year-old Keeya. According to reports, she drugged the child, bound her hands and feet, stuffed a cloth in her mouth, and then concealed her in a luggage bag. In a desperate attempt to leave the area undetected, Matsebula was intercepted by an alert e-hailing taxi driver on January 13, which tragically resulted in Keeya being rushed to the hospital. Despite immediate medical attention, the young girl succumbed to her injuries four days later.

With the courtroom packed, Protea Glen residents demonstrated their support for the Mbulawa family, yearning for justice to be exacted. The case, however, was adjourned to April 19, as the state seeks further time for investigations, including verifying Matsebula's identity and her legal standing in South Africa. The ongoing postmortem analysis is also awaited, crucial for shedding light on the exact cause of Keeya’s death.

In a series of unfortunate events, Matsebula claimed she had lost her passport and now faces the hurdle of legal representation, relying on legal aid. Nevertheless, the family's spokesperson, advocate Miller Moela, conveyed the family's gratitude towards the local community and South Africans at large for the arrest and court appearance of the suspect. Despite the cross-border nature of the incident, they now hold on to a semblance of hope for justice.
