In an unfortunate turn of events, a ferry transporting day labourers across the Nile in Egypt capsized, leading to the loss of at least 10 lives. This tragic incident occurred just outside Egypt’s bustling capital and has cast a sombre mood across the nation, known for its historical dependence on the Nile for transportation.

According to the latest reports from authorities, the ferry was making its regular journey when calamity struck. Out of the 15 passengers onboard, 10 did not survive the sinking. Those who managed to survive the tragedy were quickly rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Thankfully, they were later discharged after receiving the necessary medical care.

The sinking of the ferry has prompted a swift response from the Ministry of Manpower in Egypt. The ministry, addressing the immediate aftermath of the incident, has announced the allocation of financial compensation for the victims and their families. Each of the deceased labourer's families is set to receive 200,000 Egyptian pounds (approximately $6,466), while the survivors will be given 20,000 Egyptian pounds each (around $646) for their injuries and trauma.

The labourers aboard the ill-fated ferry were on their way to work at a local construction firm when the incident unfolded. The recovery operation took rescue teams several gruelling hours, as they worked tirelessly to retrieve the bodies of those who perished. The intense search efforts were broadcast live across social media platforms, with divers seen delving into the depths of the river as anxious villagers awaited news on the riverbanks.

This disaster struck in the small town of Monshat el-Kanater, part of the governorate of Giza, and a member of the urban sprawl that forms Greater Cairo. The Nile, which flows through this region, is not only essential for transportation, especially in Upper Egypt and the Nile Delta but also serves as a serene setting for leisure activities.

Regrettably, such ferry incidents, alongside railway and road accidents, are not uncommon in Egypt. Often, they are attributed to poor maintenance, outdated infrastructure, and a lack of stringent regulations and safety measures.

This incident adds to a history of similar tragedies. In 2022, two individuals met their demise, and eight others disappeared after their truck slid off a ferry into the Nile. An even more dreadful event occurred in 2015 when 35 people succumbed to their injuries after a fierce collision between a passenger boat and a scow on the same river.

As investigations into the latest disaster continue, questions are being raised about the security of public transportation in Egypt and whether this tragedy could have been prevented. It casts an uncomfortable spotlight on the need for more rigorous safety enforcement and adequate regular maintenance to safeguard those who rely on the Nile for their daily travels and livelihood.
