Amidst growing concerns over a rise in criminal activities, the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has spearheaded an eviction measure to displace more than 100 homeless individuals illegally occupying land near the Yusefeyyah Mosque in Wynberg, Cape Town. This decisive action responds to mounting complaints lodged by residents and business owners about increased violence and crime emanating from the makeshift settlement.

Over the recent weekend, the evictions were carried out as a culmination of efforts to address safety and order concerns that have marred the neighborhood. Tensions peaked last week when social media buzzed with disturbing content depicting a shooting and stabbing incident in the vicinity. PRASA's acting regional manager, Moseli Ntsiki, delineated that the agency received reports of violent incidents and property-related crimes, necessitating immediate intervention.

Moseli Ntsiki underscored the correlation between the emergence of the informal settlement roughly a year ago and the uptick in criminal incidents.
