City of Cape Town Accuses PRASA of Unlawful Evictions in Wynberg

The City of Cape Town has leveled serious accusations against the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), claiming it carried out unlawful evictions on its property adjacent to the Wynberg railway station. This action resulted in the displacement of more than a hundred individuals over a weekend beset by concerns over surging crime rates in the area.

Wynberg ward councillor, Carmen Siebritz, confirmed that proper legal channels were not followed, stating PRASA's failure to obtain a lawful eviction order. She disclosed that the city had been in consultation with the rail agency for over a year regarding this matter, working towards a legally sanctioned resolution.

The evictees, in the aftermath of their abrupt removal, have reportedly sought refuge in different locales within Wynberg. This relocation has raised alarm among the inhabitants of Sandhurst Road and its environs, as some evicted individuals have set up an impromptu habitat on another PRASA property directly across their residences. These new makeshift dwellings have sparked a sense of threat and insecurity amongst existing residents.

PRASA's acting regional manager, Moseli Ntseki, offered a different perspective, insisting that the agency's intervention was a necessary response to ongoing illicit activities in the vicinity, rather than an eviction per se. Nonetheless, councillor Siebritz has expressed the city's intent to hold PRASA liable for bypassing the mandated legal eviction procedures.
