In a recent turn of events, a well-known Johannesburg-based musician and Radio 2000 DJ, Nkosazana Mayeye, popularly known as DJ Nkosh, narrowly avoided falling victim to an elaborate scam. Posing as representatives for Channel O, the scammers attempted to entice her with an offer for an activation event during the prestigious Channel O awards at Max's Lifestyle in Umlazi, Durban.
The scam began with a call from a man named Kutloano Pitso, who claimed to be from Channel O and sought to book DJ Nkosh for the supposed event slated for the weekend of February 24th and 25th. The lure was a payment of R15,000, supposedly sent in advance to cover her flight and accommodation expenses. The urgency and professionalism in the scammer's approach were convincing, enough so that they followed up by asking DJ Nkosh to transfer R5,500 to cover the costs of flights they claimed were in high demand.
Sensing the high-pressure tactics and accelerated pace of the transaction were suspicious, DJ Nkosh wisely decided to verify the information directly with Max's Lifestyle. In her communication with the venue, she discovered there was no such event planned with Channel O, and thus, the offer was nothing but a ruse.
The scammers vanished following her inquiries, a classic sign of their malicious intentions upon realizing their mark was not easily fooled. Reflecting on the incident, DJ Nkosh expressed her concern that others in the industry might not be as cautious and urged vigilance in the face of unsolicited bookings that seem too rushed or too good to be true.
Supporting DJ Nkosh’s apprehensions was the CEO of Max's Lifestyle, Zinhle Mqad, who confirmed to the Daily Sun that their venue did not have any such event involving Channel O. Furthermore, the TV channel issued a statement warning the public against individuals who fraudulently misrepresent themselves as agents or promoters of Channel O events.
In these times of increasingly sophisticated online and telephonic scams, individuals in the entertainment industry must remain alert and always authenticate event details through multiple sources. It is a stark reminder of the lengths to which scammers will go to exploit unsuspecting victims.
