US Issues Stark Warning to Iran Over Missile Sales to Russia

The United States has issued a stern warning to Iran over the possibility of providing ballistic missiles to Russia, with the Biden administration signaling a "swift and severe" response from the international community should such transfers take place. The admonition comes in the wake of intelligence reports that the Islamic Republic has initiated shipments of sophisticated missiles to Moscow, signifying an escalation in military cooperation between two nations currently under US sanctions.

Reports from earlier in the week, citing six informed sources, revealed that Iran has begun exporting a substantial number of surface-to-surface ballistic missiles to Russia. This development, should it be accurate, would mark a troubling upsurge in military interdependence between Tehran and Moscow, giving the latter access to potent weaponry amid its ongoing conflict in Ukraine. John Kirby, the National Security spokesperson for the White House, emphasized in a virtual briefing that although concrete evidence of the missile handover has not been established, the indications suggest that Iran is likely to fulfill its commitment to Russia.

Iran's alleged shipment includes approximately 400 missiles, predominantly from the Fateh-110 missile family, which encompasses variants such as the Zolfaghar—a weapon capable of striking at distances ranging from 300 to 700 kilometers. Notably, the dissemination of these missiles began after high-level meetings between Russian and Iranian officials in late 2022, suggesting premeditation and alignment in military strategy.

The scope of Iran’s military aid to Russia has previously been acknowledged in the context of unmanned aerial vehicles, with Iranian-made Shahed drones playing a significant role in Russian operations against Ukrainian urban areas and infrastructure.
