Tragic End and Justice Sought in Case of Police Brutality in Mowbray, South Africa

The community of Mowbray, South Africa, reels from a tragic incident, as Ugochukwu Emmanuel Nnoli, an immigrant from Nigeria who had been living in South Africa for less than a year, succumbed to injuries sustained during an alleged assault by police officers. On the fateful day of November 7, 2023, Nnoli was at his place of employment, Perfect Touch Car Wash, when he became a victim of police brutality during a raid.

The altercation, fraught with violence, was captured on video, documenting the egregious search, manhandling, and beating Nnoli endured at the hands of two out of five armed SAPS officers. Subsequently, he told GroundUp that he was left traumatised by the assault, and his declining condition over the next few months caused concern for his family and friends.

On January 24, 2024, the pain and symptoms associated with his injuries became unbearable, prompting his admission to Groote Schuur Hospital, as revealed by his distressed younger brother, Chukwuebuka ThankGod Igboeri. Despite the hospital's care, Nnoli's health did not improve significantly, and he passed away on February 4, announced as dying from natural causes. However, the exact cause of death remains uncertain to the family, and it is unclear if an autopsy was conducted to shed light on the alleged link between the assault and Nnoli's untimely demise.

The SAPS, while being scrutinized for actions on that day, appears to be under pressure to address the issue of police brutality more broadly. The Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, mentioned at an engagement with the South African National Editors Forum that IPID had been investigating not only Nnoli's case but others alike and emphasized the need for swift action.

Yet, despite these pronouncements, detailed information has been scant, and the names of the officers involved have not been disclosed. GroundUp's attempts to follow up with Cele’s spokesperson, Lirandzu Themba, have remained unfruitful. Meanwhile, IPID has expressed challenges in suspect identification but remains hopeful for resolution.

In the wake of the event, Nnoli's family is now faced with the painful task of repatriating his body to Nigeria and is in the process of raising funds for the journey that will now take him home in a coffin, leaving behind two young children and a community asking why.
